Mobile Dating Services to Skyrocket

New data from Juniper Research suggests that the value of the mobile dating and chatroom market will grow to nearly $1.4 billion by 2013, according to TechCrunch.

The report called the predictions optimistic; while UK-based startups like Flirtomatic, MeetMoi, PlutoLife and IceBrkr may rejoice at the news, heavyweight desktop dating sites like Match.com have already begun to experiment with extending their services to cell phones as well.

Typically, name recognition trumps all with cell phones, as is evidenced by how MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube are killing the swarms of mobile social networking services in terms of popularity, even if their technology isn't as innovative as what some of the GPS-enabled startups offer in that space.

Time will tell if customers will adapt to signing into dating services on cell phones—even with the promised 24/7 on-the-go availability and 3G video chat capabilities. "The business model remains largely unproven; besides mobile advertising, some services charge a fixed fee for membership, others per message sent, and others provide free access but generate revenue from selling mobile virtual goods in addition," the report said.
